On a warm summer's evenin'

On a train bound for nowhere

I met up with the gambler

We were both too tired to sleep

So we took turns to stairrin' out the window at the darkness

Till boredom over took us

And he begun to speak

He said son I've made a life

Out of readin' peoples faces

And knowing what their cards were

By the way they held their eyes

So if you don't mind me saying

I can see you're out of aces

For the taste of your whisky

I'll give you some advice

So I handed him my bottle

And he drank down my last swallow

And he bummed a cigarrete

And asked me for a light

And the night dark gettin' quiet

And his face lost all expression

Said if you gonna play the game
