Kasumisou

かすみそう

The raindrop was always trapped in its own sense of inferiority.
The reason was the boundless sea stretching out in the distance.

Though made of the same water, the sea was vast and blue, welcoming people gladly into its embrace.
Rain, on the other hand, was damp and gray, something people avoided beneath their umbrellas.

"I am surely the same as the sea... I, too, want to become the sea."
So the raindrop whispered.

One day, when the dark clouds parted for a moment, it gathered courage and leapt into the sea.
Abandoning itself, heading toward the endless horizon-
To become the sea it had always dreamed of.

Before its eyes spread a vast and blue world.
There was even a seaside village, where small cottages stood together in clusters.

And at last, when its body touched the sea, the color of the girl's dress began to change.
The black dissolved and disappeared, and white spread out like waves.
As if to bless her, the sea wrapped her in its embrace.

She was no longer rain.
She had cast aside the self she despised, and at last, she had become the sea.

At that moment, a boy stood before her.
He was a child who had come from the city.

His hair had once been golden, but he dyed it black to blend in.
Yet as time passed, the gold began to show again, and for that reason alone, he was shunned.

Disillusioned with human relationships, the boy left the city and came to live at his grandmother's house in the seaside village.
Lying on the veranda, staring at the sky, he saw a single drop fall from afar.
Pure and transparent, the raindrop glimmered-and he fell in love.

Even knowing it was an impossible love, the boy plucked a blue hydrangea from the roadside and ran to the sea.

There he saw her-standing at the edge of the waves, her face radiant with joy.
Hesitant, he held out the flower in his hand.
His scraped knee glistened in the sun, his cheeks burned red-
All his shyness laid bare.

The girl, with tears in her eyes, accepted the flower.
And she gave the brightest smile in the world.

Their love seemed impossible.
And yet, the boy offered his love.
And yet, the girl abandoned herself to become the sea she had dreamed of.

Despite their wounds, despite their feelings of inferiority, the two sought out their own light.

This story, perhaps, is a message to myself.
Even if people mock me for being different,
Even if I bristle with thorns in my insecurity-
And yet, I must walk my own path.

No matter how dark a past I carry,
One day, I must journey further.

And upon the blue sea, it will finally be engraved:
"And yet, still."
