Baby Cakes

The Fuzzrites - Baby Cakes (Spinout Records) From the same Spinout Records that sent us an impressively enjoyable CD by The Boss Mustangs before Christmas comes ‘Baby Cakes’, a similarly laudable effort from the also defiantly retro Fuzzrites. Well-scrubbed boys, with clean shirts and painfully hip 60’s haircuts, fronted by the enviably monikered Dick Chiclet (who sometimes bangs a tambourine as they play), they serve up an engaging brew of garage-infused surf pop. It will be immediately evident that there’s nothing to not like unless you have a borderline personality disorder. And through some strange enchantment the more you hear infectious flab-free gems like ‘Easy’ and ‘Go’ with their Surfaris-guitar meets Sonics-singing, the more you want more. Lest there be some misunderstanding however it’s not all light and fluffy. Like Disney, like the Beach Boys, like the 60’s themselves, there’s a dark heart pumping away below the surface which you can hear most emphatically on songs like ‘It’s All Over’ and ‘Treat Your Love’, and which adds a layer of creepy substance to the mix to stop it sliding into schmaltz. http://www.spinoutmusic.com/ Neil B. - Leicester Bangs The Fuzzrites Baby Cakes The Fuzzrites are a ‘60s pop and garage rock trio – and this disc is ultra-retro in everything right down to the sound quality and the look. It doesn’t sound out-of-date, but it makes liberal use of the inherent messiness and “we can’t change this later” qualities of analog recording. In fact, you’d swear the album was tracked live in a big room. The best song is “It’s All Over” in terms of capturing the sometimes awkward innovation of the guitar-centric early sixties, though there are several other T-Rex plus Beach Boys tracks which are pretty sweet. Go to reverbnation.com/thefuzzrites to check it out. -Ryan Cunningham Recoil Magazine The Fuzzrites’ Baby Cakes (Spinout) is equally awesome, though in a completely different way. Led by Dick Chiclet and with the record mastered by Jim Diamond, this is premium quality, filthy Detroit-style garage rock (even though the band is based in Grand Rapids). Noisy, scuzzy and fun, this is a tremendous album that will be getting played at my place for a good while. Brent Callwood - City Slang The Fuzzrites - Baby Cakes (spinoutmusic.com) The Fuzzrites are Dick Chicklet-guitars, bass, clavioline, vocals; Matt Mason-bass & vocals; Jonny Jacobs-drums, Farfisa, Wurllitzer, vocals The Fuzzrites (I’ll give them a gazillion points for one of the coolest names this side of The Boss Mustangs), are a trio that seemed to be powered by yodels, Twinkies, pixie sticks, and a few gallons of cherry Cool-Aid! That is, the high-energy, moxie, and over-all mojo is as fast as it is contagious! With their female/male vocals of Dick and Jonny, they present a one-two punch that is not too often seen. Jonny has a Ronnie Spector (60’s girl-group icon), vibe that will have the guys (and maybe some gals), swooning over her, but she also has that street-tough gal look where she could be smiling in your face, and at the same time be crushing her three inch high heel into your shoe. Dick has that manic vibe of a Jerry Lee Lewis in his hay-day. All guts and glory- he takes no prisoners either playing a wide range of guitar sounds from twangy to psychotic reaction. Matt Mason handles the skins very Dave Clark5-worthy (wild and wooly), propelling the band head on into the song, or he can play it tight& right. This is a band besides listening to, needs to be seen. The way they conjure up images of their tunes like “Little Rocker,” “Not Around,” or It’s All Over,” makes me want to Google their website (thefuzzrites.com), trying to find out when they’ll be in my neck of the woods. Of the ten tunes on Baby Cakes, one is a cover. Link Wray’s “Easy,” and yeah, I’m gonna sound cliché, but The Fuzzrites make it sound easy. It’s a song about falling in love, and man, these guys really honor Link and the legacy he built. The Fuzzrites play it as a cool-as-a-cucumber rocker, with Jonny handling the vocals and drums, with Dick and Matt chiming in with Everly Brothers-like harmonies, and colorful swaths of guitar and bass. –Oh, have I mentioned that The Fuzzrites are one of THE BEST garage/rock/punk bands this side of the Mississippi? Yes indeed, they are! This is actually my first run-in with Spinout Records (and hopefully there will be many, many, more), other than one of their other bands, The Boss Mustangs (see separate review), and I’m hooked! I mean, I love the bands, I wanna see their live shows and I wanna interview them, and possibly have a bar-b-que and pool party at some point get their band sticker. pin, t-shirt. Phil Rainone - Jersey Beat Grand Rapids’ The FUZZrites are obviously privy to this little-known truth as the songs found on Baby Cakes (Spinout Records) are awash in deliciously raspy square waves and crunchy, crackling guitars. Retro-garage-surf fuzz—yeah, that’s an apt descriptor for this band’s stylistic leanings. Throw in some pop sensibility (only the final track is appreciably longer than the three-minute pop threshold), fuzzed-out guitars and two vocalists who clearly care about melody and you might get something like The Fuzzrites. Members include Dick Chiclet (guitar and vocals), Matt Mason (vocals), Johnny HiWatt (bass) and Derek Lancioni (drums). The album is awash in contrasting vocal styles and deft the usage of vintage mics (or corresponding DAW plug-in) lends an authenticity sometimes not heard from other retro-minded bands. What you get is a rough tone that’s not far from the garage but absolutely worthy of the beach….at night. Pop gem “Easy” would’ve fit nicely onto The Knack’s first album. “Go” is an up-tempo rocker with a craaazy solo, man, before it veers into the Goo Goo Muck. The ultra-catchy “Treat Your Love” maximizes the distinctiveness between the two voices using dueling he said/she said verses (and an earworm of a chorus). Bouncy, merseybeat goodness indeed. “Not Around” deftly incorporates hand-claps (yes, I said hand-claps) and the desire to ‘air drum’ into its catchy chorus. An uptempo “Sha La La” closes the album sliding into a crescendo of oscillating analog delay knob-tweaky feedback. The Fuzzrites are like a nice breath of fresh air you once enjoyed and would like to inhale again. These guys are primed. -Agnes Magnus ABOUT THIS ALBUM If you learned all about love at the movies, you're in for a rough ride. THE FUZZRITES explore love mostly in a state of chaos with an occasional glimmer of hope sneaking into the mix. Dick Chiclet's guitars fire torpedoes straight into the heart of love, exploding right in its face with fuzzed out, sonic barbs that hit the mark every time. The songs themselves wander the path between edgy pop rock arrangements and balls out garage rock. Dick's vocals have a sweet timbre but beware the teeth. Matt Mason, sharing vocals, injects urgency into the songs, clinging to and at the same time rejecting love or perhaps suspecting love of ulterior motives. THE FUZZRITES found love and chopped it to pieces. Here, take a bite. Oh yeah, play LOUD! – Bruce Madden
