I was born and raised in east Virginia

North Carolina I did go

And there I met the fariest maiden

Her name and age I do not know

I'd rather be in some dark hollow

Where the sun would never shine

Than to see you with another

And to know you'd never be mine

Her hair it was of a light brown color

Cheeks they were a ruby red

And on her breast she wore white lilies

Where I longed to lay my head
