Daddy preached 'The Word' in Texas,

when I was just a very tiny boy...

When a songbook and a bible

to me was just another church-pew toy...

I learned to play the guitar,

on them gospel songs that we always sang....

Oh I must have heard ten-thousand songs,

but Lord I guess I didn't learn a thing.

I was pickin' in a nightclub,

just before I saw my 19th year....

I was playin' a ol' guitar,

and singin' that I loved to drink that beer...

Oh my mom, she tried to tell me,

all the sorrow that drinkin' that stuff would bring....

I must have heard it a thousand times,

but I never learned a thing.....

I'm still lookin' for the answers,

By the time that I reached 30,

my hands would shake too much to make

the courds......

And if I took to rememberin',

all the songs

I sang were just a bunch of words

Now I'm singin' in a little mission

all those ol'-time songs my papa used to sing,

And I'm still lookin' for the answers,
