在齊柏林飛艇的專輯《Presence》（1976年）與《In Through the Out Door》（1979年）相繼問世期間，迪斯科、朋克與新浪潮音樂已經取代了搖滾，齊柏林則也選擇了試探着擁抱這些音樂革命，在混音時加入合成器，強調鼓手John Bonham與生俱來的律動天賦。《In Through the Out Door》的開場曲"In the Evening"的重踏節奏與沉重有力的吉他演奏說明他們尚未偏離樂隊的重金屬形象，而當"South Bound Suarez"搖擺的曳步舞開始奏響時，他們卻多了幾分幽默感。之後樂隊嘗試了若干不同風格，如"Fool in the Rain"拉丁色彩的敲擊樂與鋼琴，"All My Love"的抒情曲風，"Carouselambra"的合成器伴奏。用吉他手吉米·佩奇(Jimmy Page)的話說，這張唱片本應是一張“過渡性”的專輯，他們還期待一張強悍的以吉他演奏爲基調的專輯。不料John Bonham翌年便殞命，這張專輯成了齊柏林計劃外的絕筆。
