Lyle Mays

For anyone who enjoys the multi-hued work of both Mays and his long-time associate Pat Metheny, this album is a must. At times, the sheer breadth of the music makes it seem a little stylistically disjointed, but you can't really expext anything less from a man whose grasp of so many musical idioms is so complete. At times quiet and contemplative, at times lively and spirited, it all bears the Mays trademark breathtaking virtuosity - I firmly believe that Mays is one of the most underrated talents of the time and has lived in the shadow of Metheny for too long...

Like his longtime cohort, guitar legend Pat Metheny, Lyle Mays never settles for simplicity. Any other pianist naming a project Solo might easily just play some lovely piano improvisations and leave it at that. But for his fourth solo recording, the longtime Metheny Group keyboardist boldly tries going where no piano virtuoso has gone before. His approach is so unique and risky, in fact, that one almost has to be a technician to appreciate the way he achieves such a rich texturing of ivory-key improv and MIDI orchestrations. Suffice it to say that this music doesn't sound like any other piano-based jazz project, and that it requires multiple listens to fully appreciate the combination of spontaneous composing and complex arrangements and production.


Solo Improvisations For Expanded Piano

Surely one of the most talented pianists and improvisers around. Lyle's beautiful touch is clearly evident on "Bill Evans", with the piano sounding exactly the way Evans himself would have played the composition, but yet with the overtones of Mays' distinctive unscalic, melodic ideas. From the completely improvised trios to the funky "Hard Eights", this album oozes funky chords, beautiful melodies, thoughtful improvisations, and virtuosity by the bucketload. One of my favourite jazz trio albums! 


Fictionary

Lyle Mays' place in jazz history is assured as the man who co-wrote many of the Pat Metheny Group's greatest songs. For some it is enough to have worked with a demi-god; others seek to become a superstar themselves.
