    奎因-拉蒂法以充滿熱情的演唱、高昂的旋律，成為了20世紀90年代最著名的女性Hip-Hop歌手之一。1995年曾以一曲《一心一意》(“U.N.I.T.Y.”)獲得當年格萊美最佳Rap歌手獎。後來，她在銀幕上的出色表現，也令她名聲鵲起。

    Queen Latifah(奎因 拉蒂法)1970年3月18日出生於新澤西州東橘市(East Orange)的一個警察世家，父親和哥哥小蘭斯 歐文斯(Lance Owens Jr )都是警察，母親是一所中學的藝術教師、行政人員。父親曾教授她和哥哥空手道及射擊。9歲時父母離異，哥哥死於她送給他的禮物----摩托車的交通事故，她頸上至今仍帶着那輛摩托車的鑰匙。這一切對她的演唱風格和人生哲學都產生了深刻的影響。
    奎因後來加入紐約市曼哈頓社區大學學習。出於對男性主宰的打擊樂的不滿，她自己取名奎因-拉蒂法(源自十幾歲時堂兄給她起的“拉蒂法”綽號，在阿拉伯語表示優雅、敏感的意思)，開始投身於説唱樂藝術。不久即以揉合了爵士樂和傳統音樂的Hip-Hop風格在樂壇脱穎而出，成為最早的女子Hip-Hop樂隊成員及代表人物，被譽為“饒舌界第一夫人”，並隨即開始改變人們對Hip-Hop音樂的看法。工夫不負有心人，她獨特的理念和開拓精神，1988年18歲的奎因終於得以灌製了個人首張單曲《愚蠢的憤怒》(“Wrath of My Madness”)，第二年發行了首張專輯《致敬奎因》(“All Hail the Queen”)。　90年代初，奎因開始了銀幕表演生涯，以開朗的性格形象出現，並日益受到歡迎。1996年，她參加了加里-格雷(Gary Gray)執導的《辣姊妹》(“Set It Off”)，這是一部反映4位黑人婦女與生活窘境相抗爭的影片，她在片中飾演4姐妹中的克莉奧(Cleo)，一位與貧困作鬥爭的女性同性戀者，首次顯現出了對錶演藝術的天賦，她為了拍這部影片掉了25磅，獲得了當年獨立精神獎最佳女配角提名。
