5.1k Followers由英国吉他手Mick Jones、键盘兼吉他手Ian McDonald发起，陆续加入鼓手Dennis Elliott与三位美国籍团员：主唱Lou Gramm、贝斯手Ed Gagliardi、键盘手Al Greenwood后，乐团在1976年正式成立于纽约，因为成员来自英美两国对彼此而言都是外国人，因此团名定为Foreigner。外国人合唱团以刚劲的吉他与巧妙的键盘编排加上高亢宏亮的主唱歌声令他们在七○年代晚期一遍迪斯科流行风潮中得以异军突起，这种介于流行与重摇滚之间的曲风逐渐发展到八○年代是为成熟的AOR（Adult-Oriented Rock的缩写），所以外国人合唱团是AOR黄金时期最具代表性的团体之一。
