Originally released via the Idjut Boys Disc Function label, 'Too Shiny' is Akwaaba's second long player. Second album of this production crew that combines twisted disco - as championed by discfunction label heads IDJUT BOYS - with their own blend of spaced out funk and afro sounds. This album is just packed with trippy dub dancing that is reminiscent of early 80s New York sound and still championed by Francois K. and the likes. Consisting of Paul Murphy, Tom Lee and Steve Kotey, the trio also isn't short of experience, and naturally you'd expect the odd choice sample from someone of Murphy's longevity. But in fact it's the live breaks and organic sounds, supplied by a troop of musicians, that gives Akwaaba the edge. Akwaaba, by the way, means welcome in Ghana.

Akwaaba debut long player opens with Phlox, the smooth electro funk cruiser that so impressed Francois Kevorkian he included it on his essential mix compilation. Such a seal of approval bodes well for this release and it doesnt dissapoint. Do it tomorrow may be a tad noodly in places for some, but if a mix of house, jazz funk, latin boogie and dub stirs the senses then play on. Trio Paul Murphy, Tom Lee and Steve Kotey draw on a range of influences and styles. Brazil is the theme on Spandex 80s boogie on just pilau and house with an african flavour on Widdock (youve got a love those song titles too) The overall freestyle, dub drenched and exploratory feel of the album is probably the result of much careful planning and meticulous arrangement. The musicianship gleams and the production is also astonishingly pristine. From the deeply dubbed out percussion of Reasnobly Sensible to the gorgeously crunchy Rhodes of Get youngun Akwaabas initial promise looks set to blossom into brilliance.
