29 ąøąø¹ą¹ąøąø“ąøąøąø²ąø”Before rock & roll gave listeners the Traveling Wilburys, countrymusic spawned the Highwaymen, a supergroup of mythicproportions that featured living legends JohnnyCash, Willie NelsonWaylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson.The foursome had workedtogetherin various combinations over the years, but teamed upunder the Highwaymen umbrella in 1985.Their first single together,"Highwayman," topped the country charts that year and spawned analbum of the same name on Columbia.The album also provedmightily popular, hitting number one on the countrylistings andproducing aTop 20 follow-up single in a cover of Guy Clark's"Desperadoes Waiting for a Train." Afterward, the members returnedto their individual careers for a few years, but reconvened in 1990 torecord a sequel, Highwayman 2. lt reached number four on thecountry album charts and spun off the minor hit "Silver Stallion," butdidn't cause quite the same stir overall as its predecessor. Anotherlayoff followed, and when the Highwaymen returned for a thirdouting in 1995, theyinked a new deal with Liberty/Capitol. The RoadGoes on Forever was produced by Don Was, but proved a distinctcommercial disappointment, and the group did not record againprior to Jennings' death in 2002. An archival collection of concertrecordings by the Highwaymen, Live: American Outlaws, wasreleased in 2016.~
