The Rumours

5 āļœāļđāđ‰āļ•āļīāļ”āļ•āļēāļĄ

The Rumours are immediately catchy yet defy genre definition, describing themselves as jaded romantics, The Rumours create tales of despairing desire and unrequited love. More accurately, their music reflects a broken hearted optimism riding on soulful pop melodies and influences as diverse as Burt Bacharach, Neil Young and the Turtles. With a thin wild soulsonic sound, the band takes us back to the glory days of the indie pop. In Australia, their growing fanbase has earnt the band many an enviable support show with both international and local acts such as The Shins, Neon, End of Fashion, Evermore, and Dallas Crane. Their inspired debut We Are Happy could easily be described as a break up record, an album rich with the many subtleties of the broken heart. Yet the title is not a throwaway irony. We Are Happy is the perfect paradox that loss awakens the soul to really feel joy. It is a title that befits both this astounding album and this somewhat infamous band. " We Are Happy -- catchy, well-written pop tunes... The album is an assured collection of songs that display a thorough knowledge of rock's past, from the aforementioned Smiths and Wilco to the Beatles and New Order... they do know how to write infectious melodies and classic guitar parts. What's more, they know their Marr and Tweedy, McCartney and Sumner. Put three skilled musicians with superb taste in music together in a band, and you've got the beginnings of something great. Here's betting the second Rumours' album is nothing short of genius; for now, we've got a damn good promise. " Michael Franco, July 2005, www.popmatters.com (U.S)
