Sondra Sun-Odeon
Sondra Sun-Odeon is a New York-based singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist who is the voice and half the songwriting force behind doom-world-psych band Silver Summit. Their debut was recorded by Greg Weeks (of Espers) at his all-analog Hexham Head Studio in Philadelphia and he subsequently signed them to his label, Language of Stone, an imprint of Drag City. The Brooklyn-based band were twice asked to be the support for Wovenhand–featuring ex-16 Horsepower frontman David Eugene Edwards, and have shared bills with White Hills, Vetiver, Wooden Shjips, Crystal Stilts, Deerhunter, Bardo Pond, and others. Sun-Odeon’s solo songs travel further into the ether of her lyrics’ darkly romantic world, full of heartbreaking longing and desire. Guitar loops meet clouds of delicate string arrangements and morph into fingerpicked arpeggios…ethereal vocals morph into banshee-wailing abandon adjacent to detuned guitars. The sounds are at times reminiscent of Earth, Keiji Haino, while the mood and voice call to mind Grace Slick, Jason Molina, the lost doom of Nico…and yet exist in a unique tonal world of its own that’s extremely difficult to pin down. Her solo album debut includes collaborations with Helena Espvall (of Espers) on cello, Leyna Marika Papach (Carla Bouzalich, JG Thirlwell’s Manorexia) on violin and viola, and percussion by Ben McConnell (Beach House, Brightblack Morning Light, Marissa Nadler, Rain Machine). She has shared bills with Tim Hecker, Doug Paisley, Little Wings and others.
