美国大提琴家、指挥家，生于前苏联巴库。7岁从父学琴，1937?1948年就学于莫斯科音乐学院，师从柯索尔波夫学大提琴，师从肖斯塔科维奇学作曲，毕业后留校任教。罗斯特罗波维奇是20世纪最杰出的大提琴家之一，普罗科菲耶夫、肖斯塔科维奇和布里顿都有作品题献给他。同时，他也是一位出色的钢琴家，常为他的夫人、著名女高音韦西妮芙斯卡雅的演唱会作伴奏。在前苏联，他还指挥过莫斯科大剧院的演出。1975年移居美国后，曾任国家交响乐团指挥。
