Popular for super hit tracks Dewi, Mati Aku Mati, Kangen, Roman Picisan, and Angin, Dewa 19 was formed as a rock band in 1986 in Surabaya, East Java and disbanded in 2011. Their first album Dewa 19 was released in 1992 exceeding expectations and was acknowledged with awards from BASF in the categories of Best Newcomer and Most Popular Album of 1993. Their signature songs are "Kangen" & "Kita Tidak Sedang Bercinta Lagi" is till now one of the most enjoyed songs by Dewa 19 amongst audiences. In 2000, Dewa 19 went on to break many records as their fifth album; ‘Bintang Lima’ enjoyed massive commercial success. BSAF Award-winning Rock Band Four students from SMAN 2 Surabaya formed Dewa 19 in 1986. Their name ‘Dewa’ is an acronym for the names of the founding members: D stands for Dhani (on keyboard and vocals), E stands for Erwin Prasetya (on bass guitar), W stands for Wawan Juniarso (on drums) and A as in Andra (on guitar). In the Indonesian language, Dewa stands for 'god', or 'deity'. The band’s name was set Dewa 19 when the band members became 19 years old. Over the years, the band sold more than millions of copies of their albums. The band had humble beginnings at Wawan's dorm at the Airlangga University. Their second album, ‘Masa Depan’ was released in 1994. In 1995, their next album ‘Terbaik-Terbaik’ was released, which sold more than half a million units. Their following album, ‘Pandawa Lima’ was released in 1997. In 2000, Dewa made a breakthrough with the release of their fifth album Bintang Lima. In 2004, Dewa released a live album Atas Nama Cinta I & II followed by the studio album Laskar Cinta. In 2006, their eighth studio album Republik Cinta was released. Later in 2007, Tyo Nugros left Dewa 19 due to a leg injury and was replaced by Agung Yudha. In 2011, ‘Once' Mekel left the band. Though the band has seen several ups and downs in its musical career but has never failed to mesmerise its audience. Its songs are still loved and enjoyed amongst the fans.
