AJL 32: The Winners List
This week's JOOX Magazine is covering one of the biggest annual music competitions in Malaysia. AJL 32 was held at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil in Kuala Lumpur on 11 Feb 2018.
What's AJL?
Anugerah Juara Lagu (AJL), Malay for "Champion of Songs Awards" has been organised since 1986 and it features the best musical and lyrical compositions of each year it is held. AJL honours the composers and lyricists of the songs rather than the performing artistes.
Nominees are derived from a list of mostly Malay songs which have garnered the most public votes in Muzik Muzik throughout the year, and then progress into the semifinals, from which twelve songs will be nominated by a panel of judges to become the winner of Juara Lagu.

BEST SONG / CHAMPION - Jampi by Hael Husaini
The song from Ezra Kong and Hael Husaini himself is widely being played across radio station, online streaming, and sang by all. It became a huge hit, topping up local music charts and in 2017, 'Jampi' was the most streamed song, with the total number of 3,258,397 times it being played! Hael did an outstanding performance, and won as the 'Juara Lagu'.
FIRST RUNNER-UP - Sejati by Azmi Saat
Azmi Saat performed the song, which was originally from Faizal Tahir. This is not the first time Azmi perform in AJL's stage, where he performed earlier with Caliph Buskers and Mojo in AJL29. The song created by Faizal Tahir and Mike Chan won the second place as Azmi took the crowd away that night, with his voice being a great addition to the song.

THIRD PLACE - Tergantung Sepi by Haqiem Rusli
Haqiem Rusli won the third place in AJL, with 'Tergantung Sepi', created by Ibnu and Gouffran. Started at the early stage, this rising star has been involved in various TV shows such as 'Idola Kecil' and 'Pop Krew TV9'. A singer and a composer, he also wrote few songs for Irfan Haris, Putera Band, Sufi Rashid and Adly Sofwan. 2018 seems to be a great start for this young rising star!
BEST VOCAL - Aku Cinta by Syamel & Ernie Zakrie
The chemistry that won the best vocal award, and the song were entirely created by Syamel. Being a vocal teacher to Siti Nordiana, Wany Hasrita, Haqiem Rusli, Siti Sarah Raisuddin, Tajul and Sufi Rashid, that night, Ernie Zakri took the honor with her duet partner, Syamel, to outcome the others with their astonishing and close to perfect performance!
BEST PERFORMANCE - Amboi by Altimet
The song that most probably describe what's happening in daily life and surroundings (well, Malaysians to be exact =b), won the best performance award. One of the most senior artiste to compete, Altimet shows no sign on backing down. The night, the stage, and the crowd seems like they belong to Altimet when he brilliantly performed the song, with a touch of 'Dikir Barat' elements that lift up the whole performance! Oh ya, not to forget the cute ol' grandma too. ;)

In total, 12 songs vied for the top spot in AJL31. They were: Akhirnya Cinta (Salma Asis), Bayang (Khai Bahar), Amboi (Altimet), Sejati (Azmi Caliph Busker), Aku Yang Sebenar (Hazama), Warkah Untukku (Ara Johari), Separuh Mati Ku Bercinta (Dayang Nurfaizah), Lebih Sempurna (Syamel), Tergantung Sepi (Haqiem Rusli), Jampi (Hael Husaini), Menahan Rindu (Wany Hasrita), Aku Cinta (Syamel & Ernie Zakri).
