Following their 2nd EP HOW? (April 2024), which climbed a notable 69 spots from their 1st EP WHY.. (September 2023) to land at No. 93 on the Billboard 200, BOYNEXTDOOR (SUNGHO, RIWOO, JAEHYUN, TAESAN, LEEHAN and WOONHAK) are poised to once again captivate listeners of all ages with their relatable stories as your friendly boys next door.

19.99, the title of the 3rd EP, is an imperfect number that symbolizes the moment right before turning 20, the most passionate time in life. The new album candidly explores the immature yet innocent thoughts and profound dilemmas of youth at the cusp of transitioning from their teens to twenties. Comprised of members who are either newly in their twenties or on the verge of turning 20, K-pop’s free spirits have actively participated in the album’s production, contributing to both composition and lyrics of six out of seven tracks, to capture the essence of the experiences of their youth. Their music is bound to resonate deeply with those navigating the ups and downs of transitioning to adulthood.

Capturing the Essence of Being 19.99 Through Music Inspired by Everyday Moments

The album stemmed from the sextet’s fears and introspections about becoming a grown-up. The diverse range of emotions experienced by the members as they navigate the beginning of their twenties—loneliness, freedom, confidence—were central to their creative process. The album’s narrative explores various themes: enjoying one last carefree act of freedom and rebellion before adulthood (“Dangerous”), experiencing innocent heartache over a breakup (“Gonna Be A Rock”), eagerly anticipating life’s new chapter with overflowing confidence (“Nice Guy”), and realizing the less glamorous reality of turning 20 (“20”), while still offering comfort to others in their own unique way (“Call Me”). They also playfully share their thoughts on turning 20 in “SKIT,” positioned midway through the album, adding a light-hearted touch to their reflections.

The hip-hop track features the sextet’s smooth grooves that rides atop a succinct yet powerful beat, narrating the story of sneaking out at night, a secret one would rather keep from their parents.

The standout feature of “Dangerous” is its authentic portrayal of experiences typical around the age of ‘19.99.’ The lyrics— “I tell him I’m almost home but I’m goofing around” and “I’ve ignored my mom’s nagging when I was little / Counted the patterns on the floor instead”—resonate with peers, while also bringing a sense of nostalgia from those of older generations. 迷你2辑《HOW?》是装点了"初恋三部曲"结尾的专辑，续写了出道单曲《WHO!》和迷你1辑《WHY..》之间的故事。从歌颂初恋心动感的《WHO!》到讲述初恋伤痛的《WHY..》，再到集中于相遇和离别中各种状况与情感的《HOW?》。BOYNEXTDOOR用自己的语言演绎多种感情，刺激听者想起每个人至少都会经历一次的初恋记忆，引发共鸣。

As a bridge between the sextet’s debut single album WHO! and their 1st EP WHY.., 2nd EP HOW? completes their first-love-trilogy that chronicles the stories from first love to first heartbreak. From the excitement of first love portrayed in WHO! to the pain of first breakup captured in WHY.., HOW? sheds light on the various situations and emotions that span in between. K-pop’s free spirits express a range of emotions through their unique musical language, evoking empathy with the universal theme of first love.


A Musical Journey Through the Rollercoaster of First Love

Listening to the tracks of HOW? in sequential order allows the listener to fully immerse themselves in the rollercoaster of emotions that accompany the evolution of a youthful romance. The album’s protagonist feels nervous and excited on the first date (“OUR”), but experiences a cycle of conflict and reconciliation as the relationship deepens (“Amnesia”). Even amidst romantic nights out (“So let’s go see the stars”), frustrations arise as relationships don’t always go to plan (“Earth, Wind & Fire”). The protagonist gathers with friends for candid conversations about love and life (“l i f e i s c o o l”), ultimately accepting the breakup (“Dear. My Darling”) as first love comes to an end. The album is comprised of seven tracks, including an English version of the lead single “Earth, Wind & Fire”.

In order to vividly capture the essence of fluctuating emotions, BOYNEXTDOOR incorporated the 'KitschCore' style into their new album. 'KitschCore' combines the carefree nature of 'Kitsch' with the effortless cool of 'Normcore' to reflect the free-spirited wits of your friendly boys next door. From concept photos that cleverly depict the emotional rollercoaster of being in love with added graphics, an out-of-this-world music video set against the earth and cosmos, to music infused with hyperpop elements, BOYNEXTDOOR’s 'KitschCore' permeates throughout every aspect of the album.


Lead Single “Earth, Wind, & Fire”

The lead single "Earth, Wind, and Fire” portrays an overly confident protagonist, whose “sky wasn’t high enough,” grappling to conceal their anxious heart in the presence of a loved one. Like the uncontrollable nature of earth, wind, and fire, the frustrations that arise from a relationship that sometimes deviates from one's expectations is authentically expressed in the track.

The sound and performance of “Earth, Wind & Fire” cleverly convey the protagonist’s fluctuating state of mind. In particular, the 'sped-up' section instantly catches  listeners' attention as the sextet expresses the protagonist’s frantic and anxious thoughts with accelerated vocals. The fast-paced performance, synchronized with a speedy tempo, also mirrors the protagonist’s emotional journey.

Each section of “Earth, Wind & Fire” is highly unique, enhancing the dynamic quality of the song. The performance is also bound to blow away the audience with this detail extending to the choreography, which directly demonstrates the lyrics—“I can let everything go / But not this time / What’s all this confusion, doubt over me”—helping viewers easily immerse themselves in the protagonist’s emotions. The boys bring the heat with a fast-paced energetic performance that leverages exceptional teamwork to emphasize their overall cohesion as a whole over singular individuality.

In the music video for "Earth, Wind & Fire," the unexpected twists of first love are vividly portrayed through the imagery of ever-shifting nature ranging from deserts to glaciers, thunderstorms, and lightning strikes. The three members have been credited on all three albums released so far, establishing their very own versatile musical style. RIWOO took charge of refining the details of the lead single’s choreography ultimately resulting in a performance perfectly tailored to BOYNEXTDOOR.

The self-producing all-rounders were joined by executive producer and artist ZICO, along with main producer Pop Time, who aligned their perspectives with the members to unleash the greatest creative potentials.

‘하이브 신인’ 보이넥스트도어(BOYNEXTDOOR)가 9월 4일 1st EP ‘WHY..’를 발표한다. 

지난 5월 첫 번째 싱글 ‘WHO!’로 가요계에 데뷔한 보이넥스트도어(성호, 리우, 명재현, 태산, 이한, 운학)는 모두가 공감할 수 있는 ‘사랑’을 데뷔 싱글의 주제로 삼았고, 첫사랑의 뜨거운 감정에 푹 빠진 소년들의 모습을 풋풋하고 당차게 풀어냈다. 여섯 소년은 탄탄한 실력과 끼를 인정받으며 데뷔 두 달여 만에 신인상을 거머쥐는 등 믿고 보는 신인으로 빠르게 자리 잡았다.

보이넥스트도어는 데뷔 싱글 발매 후 약 3개월 만에 발표하는 ‘WHY..’에서도 사랑에 관한 노래를 이어가며 감정의 폭을 더욱 넓혔다. 데뷔 싱글 ‘WHO!’가 사랑에 빠진 ‘상대’에 집중했다면 ‘WHY..’는 혼란스러운 감정과 그 ‘이유’에 초점을 맞춰 소년들에게 다가온 첫 ‘헤어짐’의 순간을 그렸다.

보이넥스트도어는 사랑하고 이별하는 순간의 여러 감정을 진솔하게 노래한다. ‘WHY..’에는 데뷔 싱글에 수록된 ‘돌아버리겠다’, ‘One and Only’, ‘Serenade’를 비롯해 신곡 ‘Crying’, ‘뭣 같아’, ‘ABCDLOVE’까지 총 여섯 트랙이 담겨 첫사랑의 시작과 끝을 자연스럽게 잇는다.

신곡은 데뷔 싱글의 음악과 상반되는 감정선이 돋보인다. 서툰 첫사랑을 끝내고 힘든 시간을 보내는 ‘Crying’, 헤어진 후 파도처럼 요동치는 복잡한 감정을 직설적으로 표현한 타이틀곡 ‘뭣 같아’, 떠난 이의 빈자리가 여전히 어색하지만 조금씩 긍정적인 미래를 그려보는 ‘ABCDLOVE’ 등 사랑이 끝난 후의 감정 변화를 섬세하게 다뤘다.

특히, 전작에 이어 이번 앨범에서도 명재현, 태산, 운학이 신곡 세 곡의 작곡과 작사에 참여해 청춘의 날것이 느껴지는 음악을 들려준다. 귀에 꽂히는 직관적인 가사는 또래 친구들에게 더욱 깊은 공감과 몰입감을 선사한다.

KOZ 엔터테인먼트의 수장이자 프로듀서 겸 아티스트 지코(ZICO)가 총괄 프로듀싱과 함께 ‘뭣 같아’의 작사에 참여했고, 멤버들의 재능을 오랜 시간 옆에서 지켜본 톱 프로듀서 팝타임(Pop Time)이 앨범의 메인 프로듀싱을 맡았다.


처음 겪는 이별의 낯설고 혼란스러운 감정…타이틀곡 ‘뭣 같아’

‘뭣 같아’라는 직설적인 제목처럼 보이넥스트도어는 첫 이별에서 느낀 슬픔을 거칠게 토로한다. “입이 거친 게 싫다던 너 때문에 / 화가 나도 욕을 못 하고”라는 가사를 통해 사랑에 진심이었음을 드러낸 이들은 “그래 오히려 좋지 / 시원하게 욕이나 뱉지”라고 체념하며 치기 어린 감정을 가감 없이 드러낸다. 또 한편으로 “Sometime 꺼져버려 제발 / But sometimes 네가 보고 싶다”라는 노랫말로 미련을 떨쳐내지 못하는 모습을 보이기도 한다.

이별의 감정을 극대화한 연출도 돋보인다. 데뷔곡 ‘Serenade’ 뮤직비디오에서 사랑을 고백했던 동네는 불에 타 폐허가 되고, 상처받은 멤버들은 소중했던 물건들과 함께 깊은 물속으로 가라앉는다. 짝 없이 홀로 찍힌 키스타임 전광판, 군데군데 찢기고 깁스를 한 모습으로 이들의 곁을 지키는 곰인형 등의 오브제가 이별 후에 밀려오는 감정을 강렬하게 표현한다.
