Manic Sheep revisits the past with their album Rewind 2014, confronting their younger selves in a raw, non-fictional narrative. The nine tracks on Rewind 2014 were stored on former guitarist Hung Yu's hard drive for a decade, capturing the intense year before his departure from the band. A decade later, the original trio—Chris Lo, Hung Yu, and drummer White Wu—has reworked these tracks, merging their past selves with the present. After their 2012 debut album Manic Sheep, Chris and Hung Yu became well-known in Taiwan’s indie music scene. In just two years, they had toured the U.S. and Japan, landing a slot at Fuji Rock Rookie A-Go-Go. They appeared ahead of other bands in the scene, but instead of hope, their rapid rise fueled anxiety about artistic integrity and perfection. In 2014, after the young drummer White joined, they spent most of their time in rehearsals and recording, eager to realize the sounds they envisioned. Back then, Taipei’s underground music scene wasn’t dominated by City Pop. Post-punk, shoegaze, The first half of Rewind 2014 revives the brilliance of that shoegaze scene, opening with the iconic guitar riff of "Dream." "Juliet" features a guest appearance from Clock Chung of Orangegrass, recorded in 2024, whose youthful voice sounds just as it did a decade ago. "Mushroom" blends Chris’s sweet vocals with Hung Yu’s fuzzy guitar distortion over the rhythm of Joy Division’s "Disorder," showing the hallmark of Manic Sheep’s sound. The album takes a dramatic turn with the sixth track, "Kimchi," delivering a krautrock-inspired soundscape. The final four tracks blend post-punk, krautrock, and no wave influences drawing from Neu!, Joy Division, and DIIV. White’s mechanical motorik drumming established the industrial vibe of "Reset" and "Invisible Discord." In 2024, Mong Tong’s Hom Yu elevated the tracks with synthesizer pads and chirps, giving them a more cinematic feel. "Invisible Discord" features vocals from DYGL’s frontman Nobuki Akiyama, whose hypnotic voice complements Chris’s detached yet resolute delivery, embodying the lyrical struggle between the left and right brain—and spray-painting the “Manic” part of the band’s name across their wall of sound. Many painstakingly crafted albums tear bands apart, leaving them either immortalized or forgotten. Remarkably, Manic Sheep avoided both fates, allowing them to return to the past and complete the sounds they had envisioned. Reflecting on the final product, the trio agrees that only now, after a decade, have they matured enough to present these songs as they always imagined. Rewind is the act of physically turning back the tape, a way of reversing time to when music was still played on cassettes. We may never know what a parallel 2014, where this album was released, would look like. But in 2024, Manic Sheep rewinds time, bringing us back to the coolest, noisiest version of Taipei
