Having worshipped Harry since I was nine years old, it pains me to say anything negative of the master storyteller. "Living Room Suite" is the only Chapin album released during his lifetime that I would rate anything less than excellent. It has a little different feel than his other albums. It is somber and laid back with a slight country feel and little dramatics. It's hard to get emotionally involved with this album in the way that his other albums inspired. "Flowers are Red" is the only stand-out story song, but "Dancin' Boy" is a great tribute to parenthood that always brings a crack to my voice. This was the only Chapin CD my brother liked because it "was more normal". I disagree. Chapin was the master and this disc only rates less than 'excellent' when compared against other Chapin work.

THIS IS MY FAVORITE Harry Chapin Album. Way back when, I had all of his LP's and I wore them all out. ~ I know all the stories by heart. ~ At first glance, I thought I would choose the boxed set, but, alas, it did not include "Sandy," his shameless love song written to his beautiful wife, Sandy Chapin. ~ Along with "Tangled Up Puppet" and "Dreams Go By," this album illustrates to me Harry the Family Man, the REAL Harry. ~ Harry was my Hero and "my first" Sensitve Man. I was blessed to see Harry twice in concert. I waited in line afterward both times while he signed endless autographs, and promoted his passion to "End World Hunger." ~ Many years later, I now have my own Sensitive Man and our two beautiful children who inspire me, along with Harry, to strive to make THIS world "A Better Place to Be."


Harry's music is not for the "passer-by listener." Chapin tackled everything from politics to religion - and didn't hold anything back! It's not easy-going pop, but folk tunes that cover gammut of humanity. As a lyricist, he is extremely creative, utilizing allegories and metaphors to illustrate his points. Musically speaking, this album is fantastic. The melodies are well-designed and will stick in your head after a few times of listening. His brother, Stephen, masterfully arranged the strings and brass for each song, giving each work a unique character of it's own. 

The best tune on the album is "The Mayor of Candor Lied." It's not your typical rock tune, in that the music follows the lyrics. Accents, tempo changes, percussion are all added at the appropriate times. Lyrically, you have to listen to the music and the words at the same time - don't cheat by finding the lyrics on the internet. BUY THE ALBUM! 

Other tunes worthy of merit are "The Parade's Still Passing By," dedicated to the late singer/songwriter Phil Ochs. "Corey's Coming" and "Caroline" are two ballads with phenomenal melodies and beautifully scored orchestration. 

Listening to Harry Chapin is not a daily event for me. It's like listening to Bartok - I appreciate his music more for its integrity and can only digest so much at one time. With that said, I hope I haven't discouraged you from trying this album. If you're to pick one of his albums to try, either this or his live album would be a great place to start. 



It was raining hard in `Frisco... I remember driving in the rain in the early seventies listening to Harry Chapin's fateful stories on the radio and marveling at his talents and the powerful life lessons he sang about in "Taxi". I also remember driving in the rain ten or so years later and hearing he had been killed in a traffic accident in the eighties, and recall the public reaction to his loss. We were all sad and stunned. No one breathed more life and pathos into the lyrics and delivery of a song then Harry Chapin, and this is the album that launched him onto a unique, memorable and unfortunately truncated career. 
It is all here, the wry and wistful "Could You Put Your Lights On, Please", "Greyhound", and "Sometime, Somewhere Wife", and one of my personal favorites, "An Any Old Kind Of Day". Of course, "Taxi" is here, too, and I often listen to this album and wonder what might have been if Harry Chapin hadn't died so young, what other beautiful songs he night have written for us to help guide us through our lives with eyes more opened, arms more outstretched toward each other, and hearts more open and compassionate to all those around us. Sure, it's been a long time now that Harry Chapin is gone, but I can still listen and remember.
