    五座葛萊美獎得主Lionel Richie的音樂歷程從70年代Motown唱片最具影響力團體The Commodores開始，1971年時，由William King、Thomas McClary、Ronald LaPread、Walter "Clyde" Orange、Lionel Richie以及Milan Williams所組成的The Commodores，跟着Jackson 5巡迴演唱2年半，1974年發行首張專輯《Machine Gun》，首支同名單曲立刻便進入了Billboard top 10，之後這個以Lionel Richie爲主唱的放克／靈魂樂團，在70年代發行了8張錄音室專輯，直到82年Lionel Richie離團單飛爲止，擁有Three Times A Lady、Easy、Still這些暢銷單曲。

Lionel Richie spent much of the '90s relatively quiet, and when he attempted a comeback toward the end of the decade, it didn't make many waves. It wasn't until the early part of the 2000s that his profile increased considerably as his greatest-hits disc The Definitive Collection cracked the Top 20, he guest-judged on American Idol, and his daughter Nicole tramped around on the Fox reality show The Simple Life. All of this set the stage for Just for You, his 2004 return to adult contemporary soft rock. There are still gentle quiet storm overtones and subdued R&B beats on a few tracks, such as his duet with Daniel Bedingfield, "Do Ya," but the overall approach on this record is firmly within the polished, melodic soft rock that brought Richie to a massive crossover audience in the early '80s, only updated for contemporary radio. Just for You is a well-crafted record; if anything, it's a little too well crafted, sailing by on its sleek surfaces and carefully constructed songs, leaving it as nothing much more than a collection of romantic, mature mood music. It's effective romantic mood music, though, and after a few plays, a handful of the hooks begin to sink in, even if the songs themselves are never quite as memorable as his hits from the '80s. Nevertheless, this is one of the more appealing records Richie had made in quite some time, as it's both assured and unassuming, relaxed and tuneful. Unlike his '90s records, it's consistent, both in its quality of songs and its cohesive sound, and even if it's not a full-fledged comeback, it's a solid latter-day record that lives up to his legacy. 


This remastered/expanded Lionel Richie debut album is an absolute gem. Glad that an early version of Endless Love is included, the same for the instrumental version of You Are (which is still my favourite on the album). There is a rumour that Kenny Rogers' version of Lady (written by Lionel) was also recorded for this album, but never included in the final stages. I like the new 'sound' much better than the original CD-version. I like the 2 bonus tracks a lot; they add a lot to the whole feel of the album. I think Serves You Right and Tell Me sounded much better that before and My Love (duet with Kenny Rogers) is simply outstanding quality... My favourite L.R.-album

Richie的新专辑《Louder Than Words》还算是比较成功的，这张专辑不仅成功打入排行榜的前30名，而且销量也破了金。但这张专辑中没有任何一首打榜成绩出色的畅销单曲，而且，Lionel Richie向Hip-Hop风格音乐的转变也被很多评论家批评。
   1996年，Lionel Richie宣布复出，而在这一年中，Richie先是经历了丧父的悲痛，而后他与妻子Brenda的感情也走到了尽头。虽然阔别歌坛多年，但Lionel Richie以实际行动证明了他并没有落伍，Richie的新歌紧跟当时流行的Urban R&B曲风。由于对年轻一代歌迷的口味把握的相当到位。

 On his own and as part of the Commodores, by 1992 Lionel Richie amassed more than enough singles for a greatest-hits collection. Unfortunately, this is one of those compilations that, good intentions aside, falls so flat there's not much point in buying it. By trying to cover his solo material, while touching base with his Commodores fans, and adding some new cuts, no part of his career is well represented. For the record, Back to Front lacks "Oh No," "Lady You Bring Me Up," "Ballerina Girl," "You Are," "My Love," "Stuck on You," "Love Will Conquer All," "Se La," and "Dancing on the Ceiling," all Top 40 hits. If Motown had concentrated solely on solo Richie, with another collection of Commodores hits, this could have been a solid, career-topping CD. As it is, it's strong, but hearing such gems as "Still," "Truly," "Say You, Say Me," and "Running With the Night" makes you long to hear the cuts that aren't here. Of the three new songs, "Do It to Me" and "My Destiny" are classic, smooth Richie, but "Love, Oh Love" is very schmaltzy.
