This Mandy Barnett CD is sure to get pegged as a Patsy Cline karaoke project--for one thing, because it was the last project of Cline's producer, the late and great Owen Bradley, and, for another, because Barnett got her break playing Cline in a stage play. With her sultry, powerful voice, Barnett can play the part to the hilt, but the Patsy connection only tells part of the story. The best cut here, "Funny, Familiar, Forgotten Feelings," is actually closer to the steel-driven '70s work Bradley did with Conway Twitty. Throughout the cuts pay tribute to a long tradition of catchy country, from Eddy Arnold and Carl Smith to Don Gibson and Hank Jr. But it's Patsy that Barnett most often channels. So, "Don't Forget to Cry," the title track, and others purr and swoon away like "Crazy," just as you'd expect, but they come off as trying too hard, too busy, slightly manic, full-tilt from note one. Still, Barnett's Patsy impersonation is really something. And until she finally lets us hear her own true voice, I've Got a Right is a charming countrypolitan trip down memory lane.

I Can’t Stop Loving You

Born Amanda Carol Barnett, Mandy Barnett began singing as a child, winning the Best Country Act at Dollywood when she was only ten, and her mother started bringing her on trips to Nashville. As a teenager, she was signed by renowned talent scout and producer Jimmy Bowen, and eventually Asylum Records. An uncompromising singer whose style was rooted in the classic country of Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves, Webb Pierce, and Brenda Lee, Barnett's keen interpretive sense enabled her to delve into a song, study the intricacies of its emotional content, and render a powerful performance through her full-bodied voice. Her torchy delivery on her contemporary yet retro-sounding country and pop-tinged material recalled Patsy Cline, so it's no wonder that, while waiting to record her self-titled debut, she paid her bills by playing the legendary singer four nights a week and 26 weeks a year in the musical production Always...Patsy Cline at the Ryman Auditorium. She left Asylum for Sire Records with 1999's I've Got a Right to Cry. Winter Wonderland, a holiday album featuring a vintage Nashville sound, appeared from Rounder Records in 2010, followed by Sweet Dreams on Opry Records in 2011.

Sweet Dreams

This is the best debut album I have heard in quite some time! I am an aspiring singer and this is the kind of album I would love to make; country with a good dose of blusey tears thrown in! I often sing "Planet OF Love," and I almost always get a great reaction (which I love). However, this also gives me a chance to (no pun intended) sing the praises of Mandy Barnett! Every song on this album is awesome, from the uptempo "Now That's Alright With Me," to the haunting "Wayfaring Stranger." If you love country, blues, heck, if you just enjoy FEELING the music, then this album is a must have. The only thing I can't believe is why isn't Mandy Barnett enjoying the same level of popularity as Lean Rimes, Dixie Chicks, et al. (Not to take anything away from the other artists, but let's get serious!)
