This Miles Davis bootleg CD features excerpts from three separate radio broadcasts of the radio program Bandstand USA. The first three songs come from a 1957 set with Sonny Rollins, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Art Taylor. The sound is good to mediocre, with a muffled rhythm section and clipped versions of "Bye Bye Blackbird" (which fades out as Rollins begins his solo) and "It Never Entered My Mind" (which is missing its introduction). The three songs from 1958, with Bill Evans and John Coltrane (with Chambers still on hand, and Philly Joe Jones on drums), have far better fidelity and the songs are complete. The rhythm section is still a little too far in the background. "Two Bass Hit" was part of this broadcast and previously issued elsewhere but omitted from this compilation. "I Got Rhythm," played as a feature for singer Joe Carroll, is pure filler. Carroll is hardly a creative improviser, quoting the theme from the television series Dragnet in his scatting; neither is Davis very imaginative in this 1953 broadcast. The photo of Davis is from much later in his career, probably the mid-'70s, another obvious sign of the bootleg nature of this disc. Overall, this release may be of interest to Miles fans if found at a budget price, but it's far from an essential part of his huge discography.
