Detroit Michigan’s 40 Flame has donned a new moniker; the lyrical powerhouse has evolved into his alter ego, none other than Ty Farris. . Doing dirt involving drugs and stealing cars back in the day when the Hot Boys were doing their thing, had earned Flame his nickname, yet the grim realities hit home when two of his close friends were arrested and sent to jail. Deciding to make a change and focus on hip hop, his superior skills were recognised by the late Big Proof of D-12. Under Detroit icon Proof’s Yoda like guidance Farris and his long term partner in crime Famous were brought to the group Purple Gang on Proof’s Iron Fist label. Soon after, accolades including Detroit mixtape of the year for ‘Hoodfellaz’ recognized the wildly focused penmanship of 40 Flame, as well as support slots with artists such as Young Buck, Trick-Trick, Obie Trice, and Slum Village, while also completing a 49 day tour opening slot for D-12. Post-Iron Fist era Farris has been on as steady uphill grind. The more commercially viable mixtape “The Inheritance” hosted by DJ Young Mase and DJ Salam Wreck (Shady Records) offered artistic growth and received great response, as did a hark back to Flame and Famous’ grimier style on the witty, dense and gun heavy ‘Back to Business’. The single ‘Set it off’ garnered major radio spins for Famous and Flame furthering their buzz as solid artists. Flame’s solo mixtape ’40 08 Freestyles’ further recognised 40 Flame’s versatility and wordplay, a definite force to be reckoned with on the mic. In ‘09 Flame switched his namesake to Ty Farris, with consistent label interest Farris is persistent in generating more and more attention with a hefty catalogue of mixtapes.
