Lucys

“While LA-based band Lucys has rushed onto the lo-fi music scene with their hit song “Malibu,” they are not simply another dream-pop group. Rather than just fitting into a genre, Lucys’ music is defined by its ability to capture elusive moods. Their songs are reminiscent of long drives down unknown roads and relaxing summer nights. Listening through songs like “Maybe,” “Malibu,” and “In My Head,” it quickly becomes clear why Lucys has achieved such success. Each song combines smooth vocals with hypnotizing guitar melodies all over unhurried drum lines. However, despite a similar M.O. in each song, each still remains a completely original work. For example, their most popular song, “Maybe,” serves a more tropical melody that functions surprisingly well in tandem with lyrics of heartbreak. Opposing this song is “Malibu,” a song with a quicker beat and wavier melody perfect for grooving to. Finally, somewhere in the middle is “In My Head.” This song mixes soothing vocals of lost loves with mesmerizing instrumentals to create a relaxing sound. As newcomers to the lo-fi scene, Lucys only has those three songs released. But, if they are indicative of what’s to come, we can expect 2018 to be a dominant year for Lucys. “ -David (Harana Music)
