Sex, Violence, drugs, violence, hopefulness & uplifting, & did i mention violence? All of these are included in Ice-T's 3rd album "The Iceburg/Freedom of Speech". This was an album dropped when Ice and others were fighting for the right to say what they want to say on wax(2 Live, NWA, others) & the PMRC was hot on the tails of anyone who dared to do so. First off, this is not an album for the faint at heart. But if your okay with that this is actually a pretty tight album. The into is crazy as h--- for real. It then goes into a barrage of heat(Iceburg, Lethal Weapon, Black-N-Decker, Title track, Word is Bond)) all the way up to the end. In all honestly there really isn't a bad track on this disc..well maybe the party track was too much for me(even though I was dancing to this sh-t back in the days). It is truly one of Ice's best disc(probably a cool 3rd all in all, OG being the best & Power being the 2nd best). He was political, pimpish, & gangsta as a muthaf---a on this one. Well worth at least a listen if not a cop(buying for you new school wankstas!!) You decide..but don't let ya moms hear it!! 


In 1987, Ice-T unleashed what is commonly referred to as the first gangster rap album of all time, "Rhyme Pays". In 1988, the gloves came all the way off with "Power", with more cutting edge and thought provoking lyrics than his debut. In 1989, he took a step back from the straight up gangster rap and tackled 1st amendment issues, unlike it's predecessor, with "The Iceberg/Freedom of Speech...Just Watch What You Say". In 1991, he released his most accomplished album to date, "O.G. Original Gangster", delivering fully realized, and conscious lyrics that convey chilling violence, psychological storytelling, pleas for solutions to ghetto misery, and the everyday street life of a hustler, with a lot less sex raps than it's predecessors. 
"O.G." is all over the map, jumping from style to style, dominated with a variety that is unmatched by any single Ice-T album. Some standouts include "Mind over Matter", "New Jack Hustler", "B**ches 2", "Straight up Ni**a", "O.G. Original Gangster", "Midnight", "Lifestyles of the Rich and Infamous" and "Body Count". Ice-T's lyrics are funny, dark, disturbing and extremely thought provoking. This is by far my favorite Ice-T album in the bunch, if not my favorite old school rap album of all time. 


It's funny how some of the reviews of this album weren't even made by people who have listened to the CD. Base the rating you give the CD on musical merit, not on your personal right-wing political beliefs and your objections to a song which wasn't on this album in the first place...


As riveting as Rhyme Pays was, Ice-T did hold back a little and avoided being too consistently sociopolitical. But with the outstanding Power, the gloves came all the way off, and Ice didn't hesitate to speak his mind about the harsh realities of inner-city life. On "Drama," "Soul on Ice" (an homage to his idol Iceberg Slim), "High Rollers," and other gangsta rap gems, Ice embraces a first-person format and raps with brutal honesty about the lives of gang members, players, and hustlers. Ice's detractors took the songs out of context, arguing that he was glorifying crime. But he countered that, in fact, he was sending out an anti-crime message in a subliminal fashion and stressed that the criminals he portrayed ended up dead or behind bars. Another track that some misconstrued was "I'm Your Pusher," an interpretation of Curtis Mayfield's "Pusherman" that doesn't promote the use of drugs, but uses double entendres to make an anti-drug statement. (Ice has always been vehemently outspoken in his opposition to drugs.) In the next few years, gangsta rap would degenerate into nothing more than cheap exploitation and empty clichés, but in Ice's hands, it was as informative as it was captivating.
