Def Jam Comes To AfriKa

Def Jam Recordings Launches In AfriKa

Fitting with the theme of Africa Month comes the announcement of Def Jam Africa. Universal Music South Africa and Nigeria are set to support hip hop, trap and afrobeats artists with A&R, marketing and digital footprint across the continent. Following the signing of Nasty C earlier this year, Def Jam Africa has also signed the likes of Cassper Nyovest, Nadia Nakai, Boity and Nigeria’s Larry Gaaga.

Nasty C

From collaborations with A$AP Ferg to Major Lazer, Nasty C easily becomes South Africa's hip hop act's biggest export and it doesn’t stop there. With the news of him signing to Def Jam coming in at the end of March, he later released his first single from the division titled ‘There They Go’. Nasty C was set to release his Def Jam debut album ‘Zulu Man with Power’ but was pushed back due to the global pandemic.

Cassper Nyovest

It’s been over a year since Mr Fill Up signed to Universal Music alongside his Family Tree team. Since his signing, his hit album ‘Sweet & Short’ topped charts with singles such as ‘Gets Gesta’ & ‘Move For Me’. With this signing to Def Jam Africa, we can not wait to see what Cassper Nyovest has in store for us.

Nadia Nakai

As mentioned above, Nadia Nakai joined UMG as a signee under Family Tree. Since she joined the label, she blessed her fans with her debut album ‘Nadia Naked’. With guest appearances such as Khuli Chana, Kwesta and Lazy Zamar to name a few, this album really showcased the true talent that Nadia Nakai is and it’s no surprise that in the hip hop artists that were signed by Def Jam Africa, she becomes one of the female artists signed.

Tellaman

Record producer, singer and songwriter Tellaman is best known for featuring in many songs from Nasty C’s Bad Hair album. He later blew up after featuring in Dj Speedsta's top charting single ‘Mayo’ and in 2019 saw the release of his album ‘God Decides’, which features the hit song ‘Whipped’ featuring Shekhinah and Nasty C. We await the greatness that will come from his venture with Def Jam Africa.

Tshego

Tshegofatso Ketshabile better known as Tshego adds to the list of nine artists that Def Jam Africa signed. With hits like ‘Garden’, ‘Hennessy’ and the recent hit ‘No Ties’ featuring King Monada, Tshego becomes one to look out for. Growing up in Atlanta, Tshego’s love for music and wanting to showcase his talent in his home country has led him to international stardom and we can’t wait to see what his partnership with Def Jam delivers.

Vector

The Lafiaji hitmaker is one of the two Nigeria artists that are signed under Def Jam Africa. Vector is better known for his hits ‘Angeli’ featuring 9ice and 2015 freestyle ‘8’. Having worked with the likes of Mavado from Dj Khaled’s We The Best Music Group, we look forward to seeing more international collaboration opportunities and some of the best music that ‘The Lafiaji’ has to offer.

Ricky Tyler

R&B singer, songwriter and rapper Ricky Tyler, who recently released the first single for 2020 titled ‘Thirty K’s’, is no stranger to the music business. Having entered a competition that saw him spend a year in the US to grow his music knowledge, Ricky Tyler is one of the artists to look out for. His debut single ‘Deja vu’ carries heartfelt lyrics and striking visuals that could leave you in tears. He recently signed to UMG which has great prospects and we can not wait to see what he has to offer under Def Jam Africa.

Boity

South African media personality Boity Thulo proves to her fans that she didn’t go into music for sport. After releasing her debut single ‘Wuz Dat’ featuring Nasty C and subsequently releasing ‘Bakai’, she has made her mark in hip hop culture. This signing to Def Jam Africa not only solidifies her place in the game but also opens her up to more opportunities of collaborations and international opportunities and we love to see it.

Larry Gaaga

Ever heard of the ‘Gaaga Shuffle’? Well if yes then you would know the man behind the hit, Larry Gaaga. The Nigerian songwriter, artist, record label executive becomes the last of the nine artists that have signed with Def Jam Africa. The Gaaga shuffle hit maker recently topped charts with his hit ‘Low’ which features Wizkid and his EP, ‘Love Zone’.
